Vazeh Asgarov

Azerbaijan State Oil and Industry University - Associate Professor, Acting Rector

He was born in Baku to a family of teachers. He studied at the Azerbaijan University of Languages for a Bachelor's degree from 1995 to 1999. He served in the military from 1999 to 2000 for 13 months. In 2000/2001, he worked for the French Embassy in Azerbaijan's Culture Service, and from 2001 to 2003, he worked as a manager and translator in various organizations. From 1999 to 2003, he was a sales manager and advertising agent for AZ-MEDA, Azerbaijan's first French-language newspaper.


In October 2003, he moved to Strasbourg, France, where he studied at Robert Schuman University and earned a Master 1 and Master 2 in Language Sciences at Marc Bloch University from 2004 to 2007. He completed his PhD in Sociology at the University of Strasbourg from 2007 to 2012. Since 2007, he has been a junior researcher at Unistra, organizing seminars, workshops, and speaking in local and international press.


After successfully defending his dissertation on "The History and Prospects of Azerbaijani Immigration to France" in November 2012, he received the title of Doctor of Philosophy in Contemporary History. He was a member of the first Azerbaijani student society in France (ASEAF) and was elected president in 2005. He co-founded and served on the board of the Maison d'Azerbaijan in Strasbourg in 2005.


After 10 years of study and experience, he returned to Azerbaijan in 2013 and became the president of the Association of Young Researchers at the Azerbaijan University of Languages. In May 2013, he was named adviser to the rector of the Azerbaijan University of Languages, and in 2014, he was appointed Vice-Rector for Academic Affairs. In December 2016, he became the Executive Director of the French-Azerbaijani University (UFAZ).


In 2023, he was appointed acting rector of the Azerbaijan State Oil and Industry University (ASOIU). He has published several books, including "General Immigration of Azerbaijanis, History and Prospects" (France, PAF, 2014), "Gérondif, Participe Present, Adjectif Verbal" (2016), and "General Immigration of Azerbaijanis, History and Prospects" (Kapaz Edition, France, 2022). He has been president of the French Azerbaijani Alumni Association (AAAF) since 2020 and has received numerous awards, including the “Academic Palme” from the French Ministry of National Education and Youth, the “French Souvenirs” order and diploma of merit (2020), an honorary decree from the Ministry of Education of Azerbaijan on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of ASOIU, and the title of Officer of the Ordre des Palmes académiques in 2021.
