Prof. Dr. Xiaoqian Jiang
Director, Center for Secure Artificial Intelligence for Healthcare (SAFE) McWilliams School of Biomedical Informatics, UTHealth HoustonDr. Xiaoqian Jiang is a leading expert in biomedical informatics, specializing in privacy-preserving data mining, federated learning, and explainable machine learning. He currently serves as the Associate Vice President for Medical AI and Chair of the Department of Health Data Science and Artificial Intelligence at the McWilliams School of Biomedical Informatics, UTHealth Houston. He also holds the Christopher Sarofim Family Professorship and directs the Center for Secure Artificial Intelligence for Healthcare (SAFE). Dr. Jiang's research focuses on developing AI-driven solutions to enhance healthcare outcomes while ensuring data privacy and security. His work encompasses a range of applications, including Alzheimer's disease prevention, COVID-19 patient tracking, and stroke rehabilitation. Notably, he is developing an AI-powered system that provides personalized feedback to stroke patients on their rehabilitation exercises, enabling effective at-home recovery. In collaboration with OpenAI, Dr. Jiang is leading efforts to integrate advanced AI technologies into healthcare and education, ensuring compliance with privacy regulations such as HIPAA and FERPA. This partnership aims to develop safe and trusted AI solutions that improve patient experiences, drive innovative research, and streamline operations. Dr. Jiang's contributions have been recognized with over $35 million in grant funding from the NIH and prestigious awards such as the CPRIT Rising Stars and UT Stars. His innovative work in human-in-the-loop AI models and computational phenotyping has earned several best paper awards from the American Medical Informatics Association (AMIA). He earned his Ph.D. in Computer Science from Carnegie Mellon University, an M.S. from the University of Iowa, and a B.S. from Shanghai Maritime University. Prior to joining UTHealth Houston in 2018, he was an associate professor with tenure at the University of California, San Diego.
